Reciprocal Linking Is Only For Traffic

When Internet traffic started rapidly growing in the mid 1990’s, webmasters were looking more the easiest ways to gain traffic. As a result, reciprocal linking became increasingly popular.

First, it is necessary to define what is actually involved with reciprocal linking. Through this method of promotion, a minimum of two parties agree to place their web links on each other’s pages. Usually, the two parties have pages of similar content, which makes it more likely that a browser will click on the reciprocal link to find out more information.

When it was first practiced, reciprocal linking was considered very effective. However, now that the Internet has evolved into a communication powerhouse, ranking systems, such as Google PageRank, are able to detect when a page is being reciprocally linked. As a result, promoters learned how to “trick” ranking systems. For instance, three-way linking soon grew very popular among promoters. This type of reciprocal linking promotion involves three webmasters, which makes it harder for ranking systems to detect if sites are linking to one another. In other words, site A will link to site B, site B to C, and C to A so that no two sites share a common link.

Nowadays, reciprocal linking is known to be less valuable. For one, most of the requests for a reciprocal link are now automated. In the past, webmasters used to manually message a webmaster asking to establish a reciprocal linking agreement. Now that new software has been created, this is no longer the case. Certain programs today are capable of automatically sending messages to sites with similar content asking for a link exchange.

In addition, since there are numerous other means of promotion, reciprocal linking just isn’t as valuable as it was in the past. Most reciprocal links become buried at the bottom of the page where nobody can see them, decreasing the likelihood of a viewer clicking on them. What’s more, webmasters today are simply looking to make as much money as possible. Therefore, they may try and link to as many sites as possible, regardless of the content relevance.

Eventually, ranking systems will find ways to differentiate between actual one-way links and three-way reciprocal links. Webmasters will continuously look for ways to cheat the system, but it is apparent that it will always be difficult to make significant amounts of money through web promotion if you are simply looking to find the easy way out. The best advice to reach success is quite simple: choose a topic that you interests you most, and get involved with other promoters who share similar writing techniques. If you want to gain traffic, you have to be unique. Building business relationships is also very important. Overall, by following these steps, you will take your first few steps on the path to success.
